"Give me 20" has become my new mantra. Last week, I clicked on a random tweet from Edutopia, and I often take a piece from each of their articles. If you're a teacher & you're not checking them out, you're doing yourself a disservice! With the last weeks upon us, I needed a new tool in my bag to motivate and keep a routine rolling.
This management game is used for transitions, and sometimes I've used in place of my go-to "Ladies and gentleman, may I have your attention?" (I've gotten a "no" in response to that before, and it doesn't fly with this lady.) When my students hear give me 20, they know they have 20 seconds to find their seat and have their eyes on my with hands free of iPads, pencils, you name it by the time I reach one. Each time we meet that goal, we advance on our game-board, with the promise of a popcorn party at the ending square (I think we can make it...). I love this because the terms can change (lining up, anyone?), the reward can be flexible, and with free gameboards online, the time it takes to reach the end can be flexed. I tossed this in a plastic sheet protector for a cheap lamination trick, and dry erase markers are taking the place of a cutesie place-holder. I think next year I'll create a large-scale version and try this throughout the year. If you have a rowdy bunch & 11 days to go (who would know?), give this a try!
