This question is usually answered by talk of weekend sleepovers, school being cancelled, new puppies, or a lost tooth (I learned last week the tooth fairy has upped her prices to $20/tooth. Really?). However, this particular student last night replied as follows:
Student: "Nothing happy happened. School is not very fun right now!"
Me: "I hate to hear that! What's so bad about school?"
Student: "The teacher is always saying 'stop screaming!'"
Me: "Well, yeah. That's her job, and it's not really nice of you if you're screaming in school."
Student: "Why don't teachers like screaming?"
Me: "It makes us go a little crazy, and then we can't teach you very well."
Student: "Well, you're a gym teacher. Why do you care?"
Me: "I really don't like screaming anywhere in schools - even the gym!"
Student: "Oh. Well, when I have my own kids, I'm going to say, 'No screaming. No hitting. Don't touch that.'"
Me: "You want to teach?"
Student: "Well, I mean like my kids, but I'm going to be a teacher, a vet, or a wine-maker."
Me: "A wine-maker?"
Student: "Yeah. My dad says it would be good, but I have to learn more about it before I decide."
Let me follow-up by saying she's seven. This totally made my night, and to give you a glimpse of this student, she's also concerned on a monthly basis about whether or not I've found someone to marry. I think she's concerned I may be a cat lady...don't worry. Cats are the last thing I will ever own. Maybe if nothing shakes out I'll go be a wine-maker.
