1. I myself was a PE hater. I never felt like it was a valid "class."
2. Teaching that many different kiddos/personalities/ages/take-your-pick in one day was a little scary to me. I have a newfound appreciation for specials teachers.
I'm happy to report, though, that I am kind of loving this PE gig! A couple resolutions:
1. PE is so different than I remember it from high school. There's no running laps, awkward high schoolers, or jogging suits involved. Instead, I had forgotten that elementary PE is made up of kids who truly don't care what they look like after sweating like maniacs, and lots of energy ready to be burnt up with corny games!
2. I'm still partial to older kiddos in the classroom, but it's been fun to get more insight into the lives of the little ones. Can I say, God bless kindergarten teachers! I don't teach any kindergarten or 1st grade, but I helped zip coats and went on a glove-search over lunch yesterday, and as cute as they are, I would need six naps to keep up with them. That said, the 2nd graders I do teach are pretty adorbs, and I love seeing how basketball skills evolve from 2nd grade to 6th grade all in the course of a day :)
My favorite moment thus far was a younger kiddo yesterday who tried to trade in his hula-hoop for a new one because his was broken - it kept falling down! It was so hard to keep my composure, but once I modeled hula-hooping (that's a sight...), he continued to hula-hoop for a minute straight! Are you kidding me?! I didn't know anyone could do that. It totally made my day, and I can't stop smiling when I think of it.
Once again, life's transitions have taken me where I never thought possible, and it turns out, these twists and turns are usually good for us. I may be out for a few days - I'm headed out to celebrate my sister's wedding!
Happy [almost] weekend!
